Part I - Mini Tripod Comparison

$90 Manfrotto vs. $20 FujiFilm

I have a mini-tripod which I got from Henry’s store back when I needed a Kick Light for my off camera flash efforts. It works quite well and is branded as Fuji, the stated cost is $20 CAD. Now I also have used the Manfrotto Mini Tripod (3007 Table Top) made of metal and today I am going to review how well the stand up to each other.

Part I: Construction

Both Mini Tripods are made of metal, from quick review the manfrotto one is obviously better quality and sturdier construction. They each come in 3 functional pieces, the three legs, the shaft, and the mini-ball head. As the pictures will show it they are actually easily separated; this allows the ball head to be attached directly to the feet without the shaft.

Tripod Feet

The legs on the Fuji brand are telescopic which is an improvement over the fixed legs of the Manfrotto which limits it height. At maximum extension they cover roughly the same footprint, although the Fuji brand is about twice as high off the ground as the Manfrotto.

The Shaft

The Fuji brand of tripod loses out in shaft comparison to the Manfrotto for the same reason that Manfrotto lost to Fuji on feet; Manfrotto’s shaft is telescopic and allows the tripod to be significantly higher when compared to the Fuji Brand. That said the Fuji brand of shaft has a much larger diameter, more on that later.

The Ballhead

I’ll let you guess… Manfrotto wins this one by a landslide. Although both heads are similar in size and dynamic range the Manfrotto head is much more sturdy.

Conclusion

Based on Construction the Manfrotto is a much better made product, and at its higher price point ($90) it had better be.

[...] In Part I and Part II we looked at the Manfrotto 3007 table top tripod and the Fuji-branded tripod and did a comparison test. What we can out with is that the Fuji-branded tripod was pretty good for its price of $20. The manfrotto priced at $90CAD when I bought it; however if your just interested in the foot & ballhead it can be purchased at a discounted price without the shaft component. Three other varieties of Table Tripods which are not standard tripod miniturized are the Bean Bag (ThePOD), the Switchblade(UltaPOD), and of course the Moldable (GorillaPod). [...]
